North Central wins CCIW men's tennis championship for the second year in a row

North Central College secured its second consecutive CCIW Championship title in men's tennis with a 4-1 victory over Augustana in the final match held in Rock Island, Illinois. The team achieved an early lead by winning the doubles point and followed with three straight-sets victories in the singles competition.

The doubles team of Ramon Vilarroig Martinez and Matthew Sengphommachanh won their match at #1 doubles 6-2 against Arthur Hermange and David Larraga. This victory followed a #2 doubles win by Rafael Lessa and Philipp Wottgen, who defeated Santiago Diaz and Aingeru Garcia Acebo 6-1. The early victories gave North Central a 1-0 lead.

In singles, Vilarroig Martinez defeated Hermange 6-3, 6-4, at the top lineup, putting the team ahead. Augustana gained their sole point when Santiago Diaz triumphed over Ignacio Hernandez Ruiz in the #3 singles with scores of 6-1, 6-4.

North Central extended their lead with Sengphommachanh's win against Saman Rezaeyan in #2 singles, 6-4, 7-5, establishing a 3-1 position. The clinching moment came when Wottgen won over Nicolas Navarro 6-2, 6-3 in the #5 singles match.

Rafael Lessa was honored with the CCIW Elite 26 award, recognizing a student-athlete's academic and athletic excellence within the CCIW's 26 sponsored sports.
