Grace Norman's journey at Carthage College exemplifies the balance and dedication of a Division III student-athlete. Coming from Clarkston, Michigan, Norman sought an institution that combined rigorous academics, athletics, and a supportive campus life. Carthage College fit her criteria, offering a nurturing environment away from her hometown near Detroit.
Norman credits Carthage for providing a space where she could thrive both academically and athletically. Her decision to attend Carthage was greatly influenced by her meeting with Coach Beth DeLaRosby and her desire to swim at the collegiate level. "I knew that I wanted to swim in college towards the end of my high school career. I also knew that I’m just the person I am. I’m very academically driven, so I needed both to be a perfect fit," she explained.
Balancing academics with swimming taught Norman critical time management skills. She emphasizes the importance of discipline and dedication as a student-athlete. "I always say that athletes are the best students, right? I think sometimes athletes get a bad rep in the classroom, but I really do think my foundation of learning happened through teamwork and learning how to manage a schedule with swim practice," she noted.
Norman stresses the value of the Division III model, where athletic pursuits are driven by passion rather than scholarship. "It just means a lot more to us to be doing it for ourselves and for our teammates here every day," she said, reflecting on the camaraderie and personal growth fostered in this division.
Throughout her college career, Norman has represented her peers as an executive board member of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Student-Athlete Advisory Committee since 2022. She was also an associate member on the NCAA Division III SAAC in 2024-25.
Norman advocates for embracing new opportunities and stepping outside comfort zones. "Division III has allowed me to represent myself on many levels, both here at Carthage and…nationwide," she stated, praising the inclusive and driven community of like-minded individuals.
As she prepares to pursue a doctorate in occupational therapy at Tufts University, Norman reflects nostalgically on her time at Carthage. "It’s okay to be a little outside of your comfort zone and meet new people, but it’s going to lead you to so many great places and form so many great connections down the line," Norman advised future student-athletes.
