Lorrie Decker, a senior at Elmhurst University, did not initially envision herself in bowling or Division III athletics. Growing up in Van Wert, Ohio, she participated in numerous other sports and activities, steering clear of bowling for several years to focus on cheerleading and gymnastics. Her perspective shifted after watching her sister compete in a college bowling tournament, prompting her to resume the sport.
Lorrie's journey began at a Division II school but did not fulfill her expectations. Feeling out of place and unappreciated, she entered the transfer portal in search of a better fit. That led her to Elmhurst University, where she felt an immediate sense of belonging in the community.
"Once I got to campus at Elmhurst, I felt like it was a home away from home," Lorrie said. Her connection with coaches Glen Brittich and Shawna Armstrong reinforced her decision. "They saw me as an athlete, as a student first, not just a number," she explained.
Her transition, though challenging, fostered a supportive environment among her teammates. "I wouldn’t change it for the world," Lorrie stated. Over her time at Elmhurst, she has earned three All-CCIW selections in women's bowling, earning First Team honors in 2024 and 2025. She also achieved second place out of 216 student-athletes at the Intercollegiate Singles Championship qualifiers and will compete in the national championships in Las Vegas on April 14-16.
While excelling athletically, Lorrie has thrived academically, engaging in internships that align with her career goals. She aims to inspire other young student-athletes. "Division III is where you’re going to get the most out of your collegiate experience," she said. "You’re going to matter to faculty, teammates, coaches, peers, and the community."
Reflecting on her journey from Ohio to Elmhurst, Lorrie appreciates the impact of Division III athletics in her growth as an athlete and individual. "I’m thankful that Division III lives up to what they stand for," she concluded. "I wouldn’t change it for the world."
