Will McNulty, a senior soccer player at Illinois Wesleyan University, reflects on his journey during the pandemic as an aspiring student-athlete. Navigating college choices is often challenging, but with the added difficulty of Covid-19, McNulty faced even more hurdles. Despite these obstacles, his search for an ideal academic and athletic environment led him to Illinois Wesleyan, where he has thrived in both aspects.

During his recruitment, McNulty reached out to many programs, eventually connecting with Illinois Wesleyan's coaches. "I was already in contact with the coaches, and they saw me play at a camp," McNulty stated. Visiting the school during August 2020 amidst pandemic restrictions, McNulty was drawn to its community and culture. "It was a unique time to be visiting schools, but I immediately felt a connection to Illinois Wesleyan," he noted.

His visit solidified his decision as he found value in the university's alumni and faculty. He elaborated on his experience, saying, "I had the chance to meet with professors and the dean of the business school, and it was a fantastic experience." The Division III spirit resonated with him, promoting a balance between academics and athletics that appealed to McNulty.

"It's not easy to juggle academics, athletics, and extracurriculars, but I wouldn't trade it for the world," McNulty reflected. At Illinois Wesleyan, he started a club, engaged with the Student-Athletic Advisory Committee, and utilized internship opportunities—a testament to the diverse opportunities he embraced.

His time at Illinois Wesleyan has been enriched by the supportive environment. "The faculty, coaches, and mentors have pushed me to grow and become a better person and player," McNulty shared.

To future student-athletes, McNulty advised, "Don't overthink it. Go where your heart tells you to go and work hard. Trust your instincts and find a place where you can grow and thrive."

On the field, McNulty has completed 51 matches for the Titans since 2021, including a memorable victory in the 2023 CCIW Championship. As McNulty looks ahead to graduation, he carries forward valuable lessons from his collegiate experiences, ready for the next chapter in his life.
