State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro is advocating for enhanced legislation to address human trafficking in Illinois. She highlights the prevalence of this issue across local communities.
“Human trafficking is not just a distant issue—it’s happening in our own neighborhoods,” stated Rep. Sanalitro. “Traffickers prey on vulnerable individuals—especially minors—using force, fraud, and coercion to exploit them.”
Sanalitro points out that Illinois’ central location and its transportation infrastructure contribute to it being a hub for trafficking activities. “Illinois’ central location and extensive transportation networks, including major airports and highways, make it a hub for trafficking activity,” she said. “Knowing this, we cannot turn a blind eye.”
To address these concerns, Rep. Sanalitro has proposed two legislative measures:
- HB 1903: The Human Trafficking Order of Protection Act aims to provide victims with legal protection from traffickers.
- HB 3237: This bill seeks to ensure that victims are not penalized for crimes they were coerced into committing.
Both bills have been submitted during the 104th General Assembly and await further discussion in committee sessions.
“Our law enforcement officers are working tirelessly, but they need more support,” noted Sanalitro. “We need stronger laws, more resources, and increased community awareness to stop these crimes.”
She calls upon her fellow legislators to act promptly in fortifying protections for victims and strengthening state laws against human trafficking.
