Illinois families are experiencing significant financial pressure due to high tax rates, according to a recent study by WalletHub. The study places Illinois at the bottom of the list for tax rates among all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

The state's combined state and local tax rate stands at 16.6%, which is notably higher than the national average of 10.9%. This figure represents a 52% increase compared to what the average American household pays in taxes.

In practical terms, this means that a median U.S. household residing in Illinois pays $13,099 annually in state and local taxes. These funds could otherwise be allocated towards essential expenses such as childcare, groceries, or savings.

Advocates argue that Illinois families deserve relief from these burdensome taxes. There is a call for policies aimed at reducing the tax burden while creating economic opportunities to make living in Illinois more affordable.

"I remain committed to fighting for responsible tax policies that put hardworking families first," said an advocate emphasizing the need for change.

The data was published by WalletHub on March 4, 2025, under their report titled "States with the Highest & Lowest Tax Rates."
