State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro from Hanover Park has put forward two legislative proposals aimed at alleviating property tax burdens for seniors in Illinois. The first proposal, known as HB3580, seeks to raise the income threshold for the Low-Income Senior Freeze to $75,000 annually. The second proposal, HB1906, aims to establish an exemption from school district levies for seniors who do not have children attending schools within their residing district.
"Illinois property taxes are among the highest in the nation, and seniors on fixed incomes in my district and across the state are being pushed out of their homes," stated Rep. Sanalitro. "This legislation will ease the financial burden on our seniors and help them enjoy life in their beloved homes and communities."
By increasing the income cap for the low-income senior freeze, more seniors would qualify for property tax relief, providing them with greater financial stability amid rising living costs. Additionally, the proposed school levy exemption acknowledges that many seniors no longer have children in school and should be relieved from this particular tax obligation.
"This is about fairness and recognizing the contributions seniors have made to their communities," added Rep. Sanalitro. "They shouldn’t have to choose between paying their property taxes and other essential needs."
The proposed legislation is currently under review by the 104th General Assembly.
