State Representative Amy Grant from Wheaton has reintroduced a legislative proposal aimed at tackling prescription drug abuse in Illinois. The legislation, known as HB1638, seeks to mandate the presentation of a photo ID when individuals collect legally prescribed Schedule II controlled substances from pharmacies across the state. This initiative is intended to prevent misuse and diversion of highly addictive medications such as opioids.
"Opioid addiction continues to devastate families and communities across Illinois," stated Rep. Grant. "This simple step of requiring a photo ID when picking up these powerful medications will make it harder for bad actors to misuse or divert them and help to save lives."
Schedule II controlled substances are among the most potent medications that can be legally prescribed, with a high potential for abuse. These include drugs like oxycodone, methylphenidate, dextroamphetamine, morphine, and other opioids. By verifying patients' identities, the proposed legislation aims to enhance security in the prescription process and mitigate risks associated with fraud and misuse.
"This policy builds greater accountability and responsibility," added Rep. Grant. "We need to do everything we can to address the opioid epidemic and ensure these medications are used as intended and by the patients who truly need them."
Initially filed during the 103rd General Assembly but not reviewed in committee, this legislation is now under consideration by the Rules Committee for the 104th General Assembly.
