DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Tom Wirsing have announced that Judge Joshua Dieden has granted the state's motion to detain Syed Osman, a Hanover Park resident, before trial. Osman is accused of robbing two 7-Eleven stores in Lombard at gunpoint. The 19-year-old faces two counts of armed robbery with a firearm, classified as a Class X felony.
The charges are part of an investigation into eight robberies at two Lombard 7-Eleven locations on S. Westmore Road, starting in March 2021. On April 25, 2024, Osman allegedly entered the store at 801 S. Westmore Road around 10:41 p.m., brandished a silver handgun, and demanded cash, cigarettes, and vape pods from the clerk before fleeing on foot. Another incident occurred on October 2, 2024, at approximately 10:10 p.m., when Osman reportedly entered the store at 246 S. Westmore Road with similar demands.
Detectives identified Osman's residence in Hanover Park during their investigation. On January 30, while surveilling his home, officers observed him leaving and subsequently detained him during a traffic stop for speeding.
“It is alleged that on multiple occasions, Mr. Osman entered a Lombard 7-Eleven, displayed a handgun and then stole cash and merchandise from the store before fleeing on foot,” Berlin stated. He praised the efforts of the Lombard Police Department for ending Osman's alleged crime spree and highlighted their commitment to protecting residents and businesses.
Chief Wirsing also commended his department's patrol officers and Investigations Unit for their persistence in solving this case. He expressed gratitude towards DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin's office for their support.
Osman is scheduled to appear in court again on February 24, 2025, before Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh.
The public is reminded that these charges are not proof of guilt; defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt in court.
