DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Oak Brook Chief of Police Brian Strockis announced that a judge has approved the detention of four men accused of stealing nearly $5,000 in merchandise from an Oak Brook Sunglass Hut. The suspects, Jaidera Rincon-Jaramillo, Jonamer Barrios-Moreno, Gregory Mendoza-Rivas, and David Vivas-Esis, appeared in court charged with multiple felonies including burglary and robbery.
The incident occurred on January 20 when officers received reports about suspicious activity involving a silver Ford Fusion at the Oak Brook Mall parking lot. Surveillance revealed three individuals entering the Sunglass Hut store and allegedly attempting to steal sunglasses valued at approximately $4,960. A struggle ensued during which an employee was reportedly pulled to the ground before the suspects fled.
Afterwards, it is alleged that Rincon-Jaramillo drove the getaway vehicle in a high-speed chase reaching speeds of 93 mph. The chase concluded after spike strips were deployed by officers leading to their arrest.
Berlin commented on the situation: “It is alleged that these defendants helped themselves to nearly $5,000 dollars’ worth of merchandise from the Sunglass Hut... To make matters worse... led police on a high-speed chase... This type of behavior that puts the general public as well as innocent motorists at risk will not be tolerated.”
Chief Strockis praised his department's cooperation with mall security stating: “These illegal migrant offenders came to the mall with the intention to work together and steal but found out that Oak Brook police and security work together to bring them to justice.”
The next court appearance for all defendants is set for February 18, 2025. It is important to note that charges are not proof of guilt; each defendant remains presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
