DuPage County authorities have detained a Palatine man accused of possessing a stolen vehicle and fleeing from police while armed. The suspect, Ezequiel Lopez-Bey, 22, appeared in court charged with several offenses, including possession of a stolen motor vehicle and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Judge Joshua Dieden granted the State's motion to detain him pre-trial.
Lopez-Bey's co-defendant, Andrew De Lance, 19, from Arlington Heights, faces charges but was not detained pre-trial. A juvenile involved in the incident was released pending further court proceedings.
The charges stem from an event on December 15, when Naperville police officers responded to reports of a carjacked vehicle. Officers observed the vehicle and attempted to stop it. It is alleged that Lopez-Bey drove away at high speed, damaging two squad cars in the process. All three occupants fled the scene.
Authorities allege Lopez-Bey was armed during his escape but was later found hiding in a shed by officers using a drone and K-9 unit assistance. Both De Lance and the juvenile were apprehended after attempting to flee on foot.
State’s Attorney Robert Berlin commended law enforcement efforts stating, "The apprehension of the defendants in this matter is a testament to how seriously law enforcement in DuPage County takes their responsibility." He expressed gratitude for the collaboration among multiple departments involved in the arrests.
Naperville Chief of Police Jason Arres praised his officers' quick response and teamwork: "Their rapid response and teamwork led to three suspects, one of them armed, being taken off the streets."
The next court appearance for Lopez-Bey and De Lance is set for January 13, 2025. Authorities remind that charges are not proof of guilt; both defendants are presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
