The state of Illinois is witnessing a significant decline in local newspapers, with an alarming reduction in the number of journalists. Since 2005, the state has lost 86% of its journalists, marking the highest decline across the United States. The absence of local news outlets leads to reduced transparency and diminished accountability for community leaders.

"Without local news, communities lose transparency and leaders get to escape accountability," highlights a statement addressing this issue.

Efforts are being called for to support and preserve local journalism to ensure that vital information continues to reach communities throughout Illinois.

Further insights on this matter can be found in The Chicago Sun-Times.
