As the year draws to a close, State Senator Seth Lewis has expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the 24th District and extended holiday wishes to constituents. Senator Lewis was recently recognized by Josh Evans, President and CEO of the Illinois Association of Rehabilitation Facilities, for his advocacy on behalf of the Intellectually and Developmentally Disabled (IDD) community. A significant development during this period was the advancement of a "Dignity in Pay" bill. This legislation aims to ensure that workers with developmental and intellectual disabilities receive at least minimum wage. The law will take effect in five years, making Illinois the 19th state to implement such a measure.
Illinois residents are advised to prepare for increased heating bills this winter due to expected colder temperatures. The U.S. Energy Information Administration predicts higher natural gas and electricity costs. Residents can mitigate these expenses by sealing drafts or applying for assistance through programs like LIHEAP.
In other news, Senator Lewis welcomed students from Addison Trail High School during their visit to Springfield's historic sites, encouraging others planning visits during session times to inform his office.
The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation has launched CORE, an online licensing system aimed at streamlining applications for professionals such as clinical psychologists and nail technicians. This initiative marks the beginning of a two-year rollout affecting over 300 professional license types.
Additionally, ISAC is offering workshops across Illinois to assist with college application processes and financial aid applications like FAFSA, crucial for accessing various forms of student financial aid.
A new campaign titled "One Road. One Focus" has been introduced by the Illinois Secretary of State’s office targeting distracted driving among teens. The campaign includes educational videos and designated safety corridors across high-risk areas in collaboration with ISP and IDOT.
Finally, a recent legal change now allows Illinois workers to claim unpaid wages through I-CASH via a partnership between IDOL and the Treasurer’s Office. Unclaimed wages will be transferred after three years if workers remain unlocated.
