DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Bensenville Chief of Police Daniel Schulze have announced that Judge Thomas Else has approved the detention of Carlos Rivera, a Schiller Park resident, pending trial. Rivera is accused of pointing a gun at another man at a gas station and subsequently leading police on a high-speed chase.
Rivera, 44, appeared in court charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding, one count of aggravated driving while license suspended, and several misdemeanor offenses including reckless driving and speeding. The charges stem from an incident on November 8, when Rivera allegedly fled from a traffic stop initiated by the Bensenville Police Department after reportedly pointing a rifle at someone.
During the pursuit, Rivera is alleged to have driven recklessly through red lights and into oncoming traffic before being apprehended in Chicago. It is also claimed that he discarded an Airsoft gun during the chase.
Berlin commented on the situation: “The type of conduct alleged against Mr. Rivera is very concerning... We are all thankful that no one was injured as a result of Mr. Rivera’s alleged actions.” He also praised the efforts of the Bensenville Police Department and Assistant State’s Attorneys Heather Misura and Michael Pingaj.
Schulze expressed gratitude for Berlin's team: “I thank State’s Attorney Bob Berlin and his team... I’d also like to thank the tireless, dedicated men and women of the police departments.”
Rivera's arraignment is set for December 9 in front of Judge Brian Telander. It is important to note that these charges are not proof of guilt; Rivera remains presumed innocent until proven otherwise in court.
