City of Elmhurst Public Affairs and Safety Committee met Oct. 15

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

1. Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m. by Chair Brennan.

2. Roll Call

Committee Members Present: Chair Brennan and Alderman Nardini

Absent: Vice Chair Hill

Elected Officials: Mayor Scott Levin

City Staff Present: City Manager James Grabowski

Guests: Tom Paravola and Christy Sopko of the Elmhurst City Centre, Cathy Jordan of the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation, Alison Dondlinger of the Elmhurst Public Arts Commission. 

3. Public Comment

None

4. Receipt of Written Communication

Lisa Gerhold-Dirks wrote to thank members of the 9th Annual Elmhurst Craft Beer Fest staff for incorporating recycling into the event.

5. Business Before the Committee

A. Minutes of the September 23rd , 2024 meeting of the Public Affairs & Safety Committee

Alderman Nardini motioned to approve the minutes of the September 23rd, 2024 meeting. Chair Brennan seconded.   Roll call vote: Chair Brennan Aye, Hill Absent, Nardini Aye. Motion carried.

B. 9th Annual Elmhurst Craft Beer Fest Recap

Cathy Jordan of the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation spoke to the Committee about the 9th Annual Elmhurst Craft Beer Fest. Jordan noted that the event was successful, well attended, and had over 48 craft brewers with over 100 craft beers.

C. City Centre Holiday Event

Tom Paravola and Christy Sopko of the Elmhurst City Centre briefed the Committee about the proposed City Centre Holiday Event to be held on Saturday, December 14th, 2024, requiring a street closure of Schiller Street between York Street and Commerce Parkway. The road closure will be in place from 8:00 AM until approximately 7:00 PM. The event will consist of a Holiday themed tent, DJ, Santa Claus, and coordination with York Theatre for the showing of the movie Elf. Alderman Nardini motioned to approve the report. Chair Brennan seconded. Roll call vote: Chair Brennan Aye, Hill Absent, Nardini Aye. Motion carried.

D. Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot

The Committee discussed the 2024 Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot 5K and its cost sharing agreement. Alderman Nardini motioned to approve the report the report which maintains the same cost reimbursement agreement as in past years. Chair Brennan seconded. Roll call vote: Chair Brennan Aye, Hill Absent, Nardini Aye. Motion carried.

E. Public Arts Commission Murals Update – Information Sharing

Alison Dondlinger spoke to the Committee to provide updates on current public art projects in town including the Olmec Head display on Spring Road, the mural project at Conrad Fischer School. Dondlinger provided additional updates and spoke of future plans for local murals. 

F. Fifth Extended Memorandum of Understanding with FOP Lodge 81

Police Chief McLean spoke to the Committee about the fifth extended memorandum of understanding with FOP Lodge 81 for 12-hour police patrol shifts in 2025. The Committee approved the report. Alderman Nardini motioned to approve the report the report. Chair Brennan seconded. Roll call vote: Chair Brennan Aye, Hill Absent, Nardini Aye. Motion carried.

G. Presentation of Elmhurst Fire Department 2023 Annual Report

Fire Chief DuFort appeared before the Committee and presented the 2023 Fire Department Annual Report, highlighting the accomplishments of the Fire Department.

6. Other Business

The Committee discussed feedback observed online reference the Glenview and Third stop sign removal. The Committee inquired what factors KLOA uses and if a bus stop location is considered. Kent Johnson and KLOA will follow up with further information at a future meeting

Adjournment

Motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Alderman Nardini and seconded by Chair Brennan. Roll call vote: Chair Brennan Aye, Hill Absent, Nardini Aye, motion carried. Meeting adjourned 8:45p.m.
