DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Downers Grove Chief of Police Michael DeVries have announced that Judge Margaret O’Connell has approved the state's request to detain pre-trial two Chicago men accused of attempting a residential burglary in Naperville. Rocky Miller, 45, from W. 79th Street, and Vincent Ely, 21, from Leavitt Street, face charges of Attempt Residential Burglary, a Class 2 felony. Both appeared in First Appearance Court on separate days.

The alleged incident occurred on October 4, 2024. According to the authorities, the Downers Grove Police Department tracked a Nissan Rogue occupied by the suspects to an address on Apache Drive in Naperville. The suspects reportedly knocked on the front door of a residence and forced open the back door upon receiving no response. A homeowner's scream allegedly prompted them to flee.

The pursuit led officers to follow the vehicle to a White Castle in Chicago where Miller allegedly accelerated his vehicle into a Lincolnwood officer and his squad car before fleeing again. The chase involved high speeds and collisions with other vehicles before ending with an abandoned Nissan Rogue and continued flight in another vehicle.

Miller is noted as being on parole for Conspiracy to Commit Residential Burglary at the time of these events.

State’s Attorney Berlin praised law enforcement efforts: “Thanks to the outstanding work of the Downers Grove Police Department, the two defendants have been arrested, charged and will be fully prosecuted... I particularly thank the Illinois State Police, the Naperville Police Department, the Chicago Police Department and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance."

Chief DeVries expressed gratitude for inter-agency cooperation: “I would like to thank...for going above and beyond in their efforts... We will continue working with our partner agencies."

Miller's arraignment is set for October 29 while Ely's is scheduled for October 30. Both cases are assigned to Judge O’Connell.

It is emphasized that these charges are not proof of guilt; both defendants remain presumed innocent until proven otherwise in court.
