Inflation is impacting Illinois families significantly, compounded by the state's decision to forgo the back-to-school sales tax holiday for the past two years. In 2022, parents benefited from a temporary tax break on school supplies, clothing, and footwear. However, that relief has since been discontinued. Meanwhile, other states such as Iowa and Texas continue to offer these tax breaks, alleviating financial pressures on families.

Back-to-school spending in 2024 is projected to average nearly $875 per child. Without any tax relief, Illinois parents are left to bear these costs alone. Advocates argue it is time for Illinois to prioritize working families and students by reinstating this much-needed tax relief during the back-to-school period.
