Illinois Sixth Congressional District candidate Niki Conforti criticized her opponent's recent vote against the SAVE Act, questioning his representation of the district. "Certainly not the people of the 6th District!!" she said in a July 11 Facebook post.
"Casten votes NO on the SAVE Act," said Conforti, according to Facebook. "Who is he representing? Certainly not the people if the 6th District!! The SAVE Act - which thankfully passed in the House, requires proof of citizenship to vote in Federal races."
The resolution that Conforti refers to is House Resolution 8281 (H.R. 8281), known as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act. According to the Congressional website for the resolution, it was introduced by Representative Chip Roy on May 7, 2024, and requires individuals to provide proof of citizenship to register for federal elections. It prohibits states from accepting and processing applications for registered voters for federal elections unless the applicant provides documentation of their U.S. citizenship. Additionally, it mandates that states remove noncitizens from voter rolls.
