The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal has issued a reminder for residents to adhere to proper safety practices when using grills during the July 4th holiday and throughout the summer. July is noted as the peak month for grill fires, followed by May, June, and August.

Outlined below are several steps to help ensure a safe grilling experience:

- Propane and charcoal grills should be used exclusively outdoors.

- Place the grill away from homes, deck railings, eaves, and overhanging tree branches.

- Maintain a three-foot distance between children, pets, and the grilling area.

- Regularly clean grills to remove grease or fat buildup in trays below the grill.

- Never leave a grill unattended.

- Ensure gas grill lids are open before lighting them.

- Inspect propane gas tanks and hoses for leaks before each use.

- If gas is detected while grilling, move away immediately and contact the fire department.

- Allow charcoal coals to cool before disposing of them in a metal container.

- Keep a fire extinguisher, bucket of water, or garden hose nearby or know where one can be quickly accessed.

"Enjoy your cookouts and have a Happy 4th of July!" concluded the statement from the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal.
