The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal has issued a reminder to Illinois residents about the importance of following proper safety practices when using grills during the upcoming July 4th holiday and throughout the summer. According to officials, July is the peak month for grill fires, followed by May, June, and August.
To ensure a safe grilling season, residents are advised to adhere to several guidelines:
- Propane and charcoal grills should only be used outdoors.
- The grill should be placed away from homes or deck railings and kept out from under eaves and overhanging tree branches.
- Children and pets should be kept at least three feet away from the grilling area.
- Grills should be kept clean by removing grease or fat buildup from both the grills and trays below them.
- Never leave a grill unattended.
- Always ensure gas grill lids are open before lighting them.
- Check propane gas tanks and hoses for leaks each time before use.
- If gas is smelled while grilling, immediately move away from the grill and contact the fire department.
- Ensure charcoal grill coals are cool before disposing of them in a metal container.
- Always have a fire extinguisher, bucket of water, or garden hose nearby, or know where one can be accessed quickly.
Residents are encouraged to enjoy their cookouts responsibly. "Enjoy your cookouts and have a Happy 4th of July!" stated an official communication.
