Wheaton, IL – State Representative Amy Grant has introduced HB1879, a bill focused on enhancing consumer privacy and addressing the opioid crisis in Illinois. The legislation aims to tighten the process for picking up Schedule II controlled substances, requiring identification for such prescriptions to safeguard patient privacy.

Speaking on the importance of privacy protection, Rep. Grant emphasized, "Protecting our constituents’ privacy, particularly when it concerns their healthcare, is paramount." She also highlighted the severity of the opioid crisis in Illinois, stating, “The opioid crisis in Illinois is a serious epidemic, with more lives lost to the opioid crisis than fatalities from motor vehicle accidents and homicides combined.”

HB1879 proposes a solution by aligning the pickup process for powerful opioids with that of other controlled substances, as Rep. Grant explained, “This bill is about applying a consistent standard across the board. If we require ID for purchasing Draino, it’s reasonable to expect the same for medications with a high potential for abuse.” The bill aims to curb prescription narcotic abuse and protect patient privacy rights.

Despite facing a challenge in the Public Health Committee hearing, where it was not brought to debate or vote, Rep. Grant remains committed to advocating for the legislation. She expressed her determination, saying, “While disappointed by this setback, I remain committed to advocating for this crucial legislation.” Rep. Grant emphasized the importance of the bill in the fight against the opioid crisis, ensuring that potent medications do not end up in the wrong hands.

Rep. Amy Grant, currently serving her 3rd term as State Representative in the General Assembly, represents the 47th district encompassing several communities in DuPage County.
