Illinois State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro has introduced two critical bills in the spring session of the 2024 Illinois General Assembly aimed at combating human trafficking. The bills, HB5469 and HB5468, are designed to provide much-needed support and legal protection for victims of human trafficking.

According to Representative Sanalitro, "HB5469 recognizes the unique challenges faced by trafficking victims and offers a legal mechanism to shield them from further harm." This legislation, known as the Human Trafficking Order of Protection Act, enables victims of human trafficking to obtain orders of protection against their traffickers, demonstrating a commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of the most vulnerable in society.

In addition, "HB5468 provides a crucial legal recourse for victims of human trafficking who have been compelled to commit offenses," stated Representative Sanalitro. This bill, known as the Affirmative Defense for Trafficking Victims, creates an affirmative defense for victims of human trafficking, requiring them to demonstrate clear and convincing evidence of their trafficking situation. The aim is to ensure that the legal system offers protection and a path towards justice for these victims.

Representative Sanalitro's efforts in introducing these bills highlight her dedication to addressing the issue of human trafficking in Illinois. Through these legislative measures, she hopes to bring about systemic change, offer hope, and restore dignity to those affected by this heinous crime.

State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro represents House District 48, which includes various communities in suburban DuPage and Cook counties. For more information or to schedule an interview with Representative Sanalitro, please contact 630-349-0645.
