As the year comes to a close, Illinois has much to celebrate and look forward to this holiday season. Economic activity is rebounding, and the state is filled with excitement as December approaches. In the spirit of supporting local communities, Illinois encourages holiday shoppers to shop local and support small businesses that are the backbone of the state's economy.

One recent success for Illinois is the passing of House Bill 2473, which ends the moratorium on new nuclear reactor construction. This legislation paves the way for the development of next-generation Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and aims to create a stronger and more reliable power supply for the state. The bill received overwhelming support in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, and it now awaits final action by the governor.

In addition to this, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) has announced the Illinois B2B NewBiz grant program. This program provides financial relief to businesses that started during the COVID-19 pandemic in industries that were most impacted by it. Eligible businesses can apply for grants of up to $30,000, and the application period is open until January 11, 2024.

Furthermore, Illinois has opened a new Secretary of State's Road Testing Center in Addison. This facility will offer behind-the-wheel driving tests and other basic driver services, providing a much-needed service for the region. The Secretary of State's Office has been working to improve service delivery, including implementing appointment systems and senior-specific services, to ensure a better experience for Illinoisans.

Illinois is also strengthening its "Clear and Present Danger" law to keep firearms out of the hands of potentially dangerous individuals. Following a tragic mass shooting in Highland Park, the state recognized the need to close loopholes in the existing law. The strengthened law requires the Illinois State Police to keep all clear-and-present-danger reports on file, regardless of the individual's FOID card status. This legislation aims to protect lives and ensure the safety of the community.

In an effort to honor and preserve the stories of Illinois veterans, the Illinois Veterans History Project is seeking submissions of first-hand recollections, photos, and mementos. This project, in collaboration with the Library of Congress and the Illinois Secretary of State's office, aims to collect and make accessible the stories of veterans who have served in the military. Illinois veterans and their families are encouraged to submit their materials through the project's website.

As the year comes to an end, Illinois wishes everyone a happy holiday season filled with love, joy, and laughter. Illinois hopes that families and loved ones can come together and enjoy quality time during these next few weeks. From the state's leaders and their families, they extend warm wishes for a wonderful holiday season and a prosperous new year.
