Former Village of Homer Glen Trustee and current Illinois State Representative candidate for District 82, Nicole La Ha Zwiercan, has voiced her strong support for the Invest in Kids program, emphasizing its role in providing educational opportunities and choices to students while ensuring safety from potentially failing or dangerous school situations.
“The Invest in Kids program is about opportunity. It’s about choices and in some cases, it’s about safety from failing and dangerous school situations,” La Ha Zwiercan said on Facebook.
“In addition, I’d personally like to see this program expanded to be much more inclusive to be able to serve even more students of all needs.”
The Invest in Kids tax scholarship program allows donors to receive a tax benefit for donating to a state-maintained scholarship program for private schools for low-income families, Prairie State Wire reported.
It serves over 9,000 K-12 students who are the beneficiaries of the Invest in Kids Tax Credit.
The program is set to be phased out given Democrat leaders who removed the program’s funding.
“This is not something that’s been covered by the budget agreement. It’s something that still has time, potentially, but it’s not something that’s in the budget agreement,” Pritzker said at a press conference announcing a budget deal had been struck.
The GOP is pushing for the Invest in Kids tax scholarship program to be reinstated in the fall veto session.
Republicans, are seeking to make the scholarship permanent but are up against Democrats supported by the powerful Chicago Teachers Union, who advocate for its termination, Politico noted.
House District 82 is currently represented by State Rep. John Egofske (R-Lemont) who also serves as Mayor of Lemont. Egofske was appointed to the seat following former House Minority Leader Jim Durkin’s resignation, according to Ballotpedia.
District 82 covers Darien and Lemont in DuPage and Cook counties.
