Kimberly Hobbs, a candidate for Wheaton Warrenville Unit School District 200, said the school district needs to get back to basics and address academic decline.
Parents for CUSD 200 believes in academic excellence.
"Academic decline is a serious issue for our district,” Hobbs said in the Parents for CUSD 200 Children Facebook post. “Even prior to COVID, one can chart a decrease in our students’ overall proficiency in the critical areas of English Language Arts and Mathematics. That there are many factors playing into this situation is beyond dispute. One area that I would explore, if elected, would be how to address the early literacy needs of children who live within the borders of CUSD 200. Exposure to, and delight in the written word is one of the strongest foundations for academic success. While many of our students enter our school system with such a foundation, many others arrive having encountered obstacles to its development. Surely if we can strengthen those who have faced such difficulties, we will see them reap results which will benefit both them and our district."
Hobbs has been living in Wheaton for more than 30 years. She obtained a B.A. in Christian Education from Wheaton College. "She has been married to Steven Hobbs for 23 years and they have seven children, all of whom attend, or have graduated from District 200 schools,” the Parents for CUSD200 Children's website reads. “For several years Kim has been involved in the Art Smart program at Longfellow Elementary where she has had the privilege of sharing her passion for Art with many students,” it further read. She has been an active member of Grace Church of DuPage since 1990, serving in the Children’s and Youth ministries, as well as co-leading Women’s Bible studies.” She is passionate about learning “and her chief interests are theology, arts and crafts, current affairs, and sustainable architecture.”
State Rep. Amy Grant (R-Wheaton) is putting her support behind Parents for CUSD 200 Children. “I’m very happy about my local district 200 school board (candidates) “I'm just so excited, so happy that the parents have said, okay, enough with you lawmakers. We're not going to let you push us around. It's really great,” Grant told DuPage Policy Journal. “I think that they're upset pretty much about what has been thrown at them by the majority legislation as far as sex education. I think the school has now been able to opt out of this because they're putting their sex ed in the health class. And I think that the lawmakers are figuring this out and they're going to probably do something about that, too.”
The 2023 elections include a Consolidated Primary on Feb. 28 if required and a Consolidated election on April 4. Election details in DuPage County are posted on its website.
