At the Jan. 23 meeting of the Bloomingdale School District 13 Board of Education, the board honored some of its students in its Above and Beyond recognition program.
The first award went to Grace from DuJardin Elementary School. The board was told Grace is in first grade and is always down for a challenge in learning. She loves school and is always positive every day, participating in class and encouraging confidence in her peers. She is always cheering on her classmates and lending a helping hand whenever they need it.
“She is always cheering on her classmates, celebrating their victories and helping them through challenges,” Board Member Michael Lensia said. “Grace leads by example, and follows our six pillars of character. She sets a great example for her peers and is not afraid to speak up when she sees something is not right or someone who needs extra help. For being an exemplary student and a compassionate classmates to others at DuJardin elementary school, the Board of Education recognizes [Grace] with the Above and Beyond award.”
From Erickson Elementary school, the board recognized Hudson, a third grader. The board was told he is a well-rounded student who helps his classmates every day. He loves to learn about all topics in the classroom, constantly asking questions. He has a contagious smile and easily brightens anyone’s day when they encounter him, and he loves to work alongside his peers.
From Westfield Middle school, Veronica Archacki and Tia Tenneti, both eighth graders, were chosen as the Above and Beyond students. Tia is an outgoing student, always looking for ways to help her classmates or grow in her leadership abilities. She currently serves as a peer tutor, and is well respected by all of her classmates for her help. She also acted in the middle school play. Veronica was in the play as well, and always looked out for students during rehearsals and performances to make sure no one forgot their lines or was too nervous. The two were commended for their leadership in the theatre. Tia and Veronica are both student ambassadors for the board as well. They were selected based on a long list of criteria, including student council membership, recommendations from council and teachers, excellent academic standings as well as history in extra curricular activities, and final approval from the board. These ambassadors are welcome at the school board meetings to comment, answer questions, or question the board members when they see fit.
In other business, the board discussed four new employees and four resignations and retirements.
Board member Kari Zehme was absent from the meeting.
The board will meet again at 7 p.m. on Feb. 27 at the district administration office at 164 Euclid Ave.
