Republican state Senator Win Stoller is warning he fears democrats are again working behind the scenes to advance the graduated income tax proposals voters previously soundly rejected on Jan. 19.
In a recent Facebook post, Stoller expressed his concern on the matter.
"Despite the fact that Illinois voters overwhelmingly rejected the graduated income tax amendment just two years ago, at least one Illinois legislator is trying to revive it," Stoller posted. "This is something that everyone needs to keep a close eye on as the new General Assembly returns to Springfield this spring."
Stoller warned Illinois voters to anticipate the tax changes.
"This is something that everyone needs to keep a close eye on as the new General Assembly returns to Springfield this spring," Stoller said.
However, there Sen. Rob Martwick argues that the graduated tax will be beneficial.
As reported by Chicago business Martwick, who sponsored the 2022 proposal, has gone on record with his belief that the state and especially middle-class families need the income and lower property taxes that a graduated income tax would bring.
Martwick said he has not yet drafted enabling legislation for a second referendum and that his version likely would be different from the last one. With some speculating that the matter could drag on for months, Martwick said his hope is to offer a bill as soon as next month and see what support it draws.
