Gov. J.B. Pritzker's office is fighting back against resistance to the state's new assault weapons ban.
"The assault weapons ban is the law of Illinois," Pritzker’s office said, according to Fox News Digital. "The General Assembly passed the bill and the Governor signed it into law to protect children in schools, worshippers at church, and families at parades from the fear of sudden mass murder."
To date, more than six dozen sheriffs from across the state have said they wouldn't enforce the new law that places a ban on semiautomatic rifles and other high-powered weapons.
The Illinois Senate passed its version of the "Protect Illinois Communities Act" earlier this month, with the measure also prohibiting the manufacture and sale of semiautomatic rifles and pistols, .50-caliber guns, as well as attachments that can increase a gun’s fire rate.
With The Illinois Sheriff's Association already on record as opposing the bill, at least 74 sheriff offices have since publicly posted statements in opposition of the law, with many of them arguing that the law is unconstitutional.
