At the Jan. 9 meeting of the Village of Glen Ellyn board, Public Works Director Dave Buckley showed a short video that displayed the finished first phase of the streets and utilities improvement plan.

Buckley also thanked the resident engineer, field consultant, project superintendents, utilities team, and the city’s public works department for their work.

Phase 2 of the project begins in 2023.

In other business, the village welcomed Dan Anderson from the Glen Ellyn Historical Society to talk about another project.

He told council about the Historic Plaque Project to inform both residents and tourists about the area's history. The society took the idea from Geneva, who has historical granite plaques in its sidewalks. The Historical Society brought this up as the village was already planning on tearing up and redoing the sidewalks.

“It's a pleasure to have the opportunity to bring the board up to date on where things stand on the Historic Plaque Project,” Anderson said. “At the risk of stating the obvious, Glen Ellyn has a very rich downtown history, which actually dates back to before the Civil War. ... While many people are aware of pieces of our history, such as the story behind the horse trough, most people don't know all the details. And the devil's in the details, the fun part’s in the details. The goal of the historic Sidewalk Plaque Project is to bring this important information – at least for those of us who think it's important – to the public's attention.”

The board agreed to implement the sidewalk plaques.

The Historical Society will research, write, and create the plaques, and the village will install install them during installation of new sidewalks. The society has created 19 plaques for phase 1, with about 60 planned in total.

The board also discussed paying approximately $7.95 million in payroll and vouchers.

The board will meet again at 7 p.m. on Monday at the Glen Ellyn Civic Center’s Galligan board room on 535 Duane St.
