Former House minority leader Jim Durkin on Jan. 11 announced his resignation from the House. "You know it in your heart and in your stomach when it's time to go, and you leave under your own terms," he told ABC7.
In the fall, Durkin had stepped down from his post as minority leader after Republican election losses. Colleagues had blamed him for the losses.
In the wake of Sen. Darren Bailey's (R-Louisville) loss to unseat Gov. J.B. Pritzker last November, Durkin has expressed concern about the direction of the party.
"You can't have a party that's controlled by extremists. It's not what the Republican Party of Illinois is about," he told 7ABC. "I've always said I believe in moderation, I believe in collaboration and negotiation with the other party. And it seems that that's been lost."
Illinois Republican Party leaders will pick a successor for Durkin's seat in the House, which he had won in November.
