The Darien City Council recently announced the winners for the 2022 Holiday Decorating Contest.
The annual contest aims to spread holiday cheer and encourage residents to partake in beautification of the community, as discussed at the Dec. 19 council meeting. The city chooses five ranked winners, honorable mentions, and a whole block to be recognized. A lifetime achievement award is also given.
“I want to thank all the residents who participated,” Darien Mayor Joseph Marchese said at the meeting. “I think somebody said ... that when you decorate your home, everybody in Darien benefits because they get an opportunity to go past your house. Tomorrow night, we're going to have our trolley ride through past these homes.”
The five winners, in order from first through fifth place, were 621 Maple Lane, 7702 Florence Ave., 7809 Farmingdale Drive, 7718 Sawyer Road, and 7406 Richmond Ave. Many of these houses are known for their elaborate displays that seem to grow each year, with some homeowners saying they spend over 30 hours setting up. The block winner was the 7600 - 7800 Block of Sawyer Road.
The year’s honorable mentions were 7209 Richmond Ave. (which also won the Lifetime Award for owner Amy’s hard work and dedication), 7301 Bunker Road, 1614 Darien Club Drive, 1921 McAdam Road, and 533 73rd street. There were a lot of family efforts in designing and perfecting the various displays which involved many characters including penguins, bears, elves, and reindeer.
