West Chicago Elementary School District 33 gains new team members: 'It really does take a village'

The West Chicago Elementary School District 33 School Board held a meeting to bring three new administrators into its team: a principal, an assistant principal and a coordinator of partnerships.

“We have really put an emphasis on (the) voice and choice of our students,” Superintendent Kristina Davis said during the meeting. “So a new process that we put together for Gary schools principal interviews was we included not just the parents, but the students came along with their parents and had an opportunity to ask questions and follow up.”

The board will meet again at 7 p.m. on Oct. 6 in the community room at Leman Middle School on 238 East Hazel Street.

Amy Correa is the new principal at Gary Elementary School. She has served students in various areas of Chicago for 26 years. She was a part of the US Marine Corp before being honorably discharged and working in various student support and bilingual educational positions. She has two twin sons and three small dogs.

Not only that, students in the district had an opportunity to get a free backpack. The WeGo Together for Kids initiative distributed approximately 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies for the seventh time.

“It really does take a village, and I couldn’t be more proud to represent a community that so willingly takes care of its own,” Senator Karina Villa said in Illinois Senate Democrats. “We asked our neighbors to give, and they donated their time, money, and goods without hesitation. Thanks to this tremendous outpouring of generosity by the community, nearly 1,000 of our students will be starting the school year off right.”

Colleen Kelly is the new assistant principal at Indian Knoll Elementary school. She is a native of Wheaton Illinois and went to Northwestern and majored in Human Psychological services and Spanish. She was also a Big Ten athletic in soccer while in college. She has since taught, coached, and served in academic administration.

Students from the district have shown their performing arts skills as its Ballet Folklorico had a performance in May, the Daily Herald reporter.

Sarah Norton is the new coordinator of partnerships, a position she has served as the interim coordinator since March of 2022. She has worked in the school district since 2018. Sarah is a licensed clinical social worker and earned her bachelor’s in 2015 from Xavier University and her master’s in 2017 from the University of Illinois - Chicago.
