The Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA) is advocating for it members to protest the Glen Ellyn Village Board’s workshop, which proposes a ban on some forms of guns.

“Dear ISRA member, It has come to our attention that the city of Glen Ellyn Village Board members will be having a workshop proposing a ban on AR (assault rifles) and other sport rifles. The workshop will be held on Monday, Aug. 15 at 7 p.m. We understand the meeting will be at the Glen Ellyn Civic Center, 535 Duane St., Glen Ellyn, IL 60137. If you can attend we ask that you arrive by 6:45 and oppose this proposal. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. The ISRA opposes this proposal. We believe it is a violation of the Illinois Preemption Law that was passed when conceal carry was passed. Thank you for your continued support,” the Illinois State Rifle Association said in a letter to it members.

A number of municipalities have moved to ban so-called assault rifles and extended magazines in the wake of several high profile mass shootings.

In 2018 Mike Weisman, a Glen Ellyn resident and a board member of the Illinois State Rifle Association, warned townships that legal action would result from such a ban, The State Journal-Register reported.

Similarly, the Naperville City Council recently moved to ban “semi-automatic rifles, pistols, shotguns and large capacity magazines that hold 10 rounds of ammunition by any licensed dealer,” Dupage Policy Journal reported.

The proposals come in the midst of a spate of gun crime in the Chicagoland area.

A shooter opened fire on the crowd during the July 4 weekend Highland Park procession, leaving seven people dead and 48 injured.

In the same time frame, there were 68 other shootings, eight of which resulted in fatalities, in the Chicago metropolitan region.

Such weekend outbreaks of gun violence appear to be common in Chicago, according to CNN.

The Highland Park incident, which happened in a neighborhood with a predominately white population, has been accused of bias by some.
