Midwestern University congratulates Sydney Lazzell, a physical therapy student on the Downers Grove Campus, who recently earned the Mary McMillan Student Scholarship from the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), a community of more than 100,000 physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and physical therapy students. Sydney will receive a Doctorate in Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) from Midwestern University in May and was chosen for the national award for her superior scholastic ability and potential for future professional contributions.
“The Mary McMillan Student Scholarship will allow me to seek out continuing education opportunities that will contribute to my professional development as I start my career in physical therapy,” Sydney said. “It will also provide me with new opportunities to be involved in the APTA and continue to advocate for the profession.” The scholarship is named for Mary McMillan, who is considered a pioneer of modern physical therapy and was the founding president of the APTA.
Sydney recently accepted a position with Rocky Mountain Spine and Sport in Colorado and will be pursuing a career in outpatient orthopedic physical therapy. She also plans to apply for a sports residency program to achieve her professional goal of becoming a board-certified sports physical therapist. “I chose to become a physical therapist because of my interest in the human body and my passion for health, wellness, and exercise. As a licensed physical therapist, I will have the ability to educate and empower individuals across the lifespan about how to achieve their goals and maximize their quality of life,” she said.
Sydney credits her experience at Midwestern University and the support of her faculty members for helping her earn the scholarship and excel in the physical therapy program. “I am grateful for the experiences and opportunities Midwestern University provided over the past three years that allowed me to apply for this outstanding award and scholarship. Without the constant motivation and guidance of the PT faculty members, I would not have been as driven or successful in this program,” she added.
Midwestern University prepares students to become physical therapists who practice across the healthcare continuum, treating patients of all ages and making meaningful contributions to their patients, community, and profession. “The faculty are proud of Sydney for her many accomplishments. Sydney serves as a role model to other students as she took advantage of every learning opportunity that Midwestern University PT Program had to offer," said Deborah Anderson, PT, Ed.D., PCS, Physical Therapy Program Director.
