GPS community read author is a Glenbard graduate
The Glenbard Parent Series: (GPS) Navigating Healthy Families has chosen “Acts of Faith: The Story of an American Muslim, the Struggle for the Soul of a Generation” by Glenbard South alumnus Eboo Patel as its second semester community-wide read. GPS will host Patel in a presentation titled: We Need to Build: Education for Diverse Democracy at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, via Zoom. Go to glenbardgps.org for the link to this webinar.
To be placed on a reminder list for GPS events or submit a question in advance, send an email to gilda_ross@glenbard.org.
“Acts of Faith” addresses racism, bullying, immigration and building the next generation of young people to create a more just and compassionate world. It is a coming-of-age story about a Muslim immigrant’s search for identity and the development of an interfaith youth movement focused on building bridges across differences. Patel’s narrative won the Louisville Grawemeyer Award in Religion and focuses on his faith development growing up a racial/ethnic/religious minority in Glen Ellyn.
In his most recent book, “We Need to Build Field Notes for Diverse Democracy,” Patel provides a guide for promoting positive social change. His mission is to see American society realized as a welcoming, just and inclusive democracy for all.
Patel is founder and president of Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC), which is a Chicago-based organization that builds interfaith movements on college campuses. Patel also wrote “Sacred Ground: Pluralism, Prejudice, and the Promise of America.” Patel was recently awarded the Guru Nanak Interfaith Prize, an award given to individuals advancing awareness of the role of religious dialogue in the pursuit of peace.
Following Patel’s remarks, Dr. Tyrone Howard will join Patel in conversation. Howard is a professor of education in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies and associate dean for equity, diversity and inclusion at UCLA. He is the author of the bestseller “All Students Must Thrive: Transforming Schools to Combat Toxic Stressors and Cultivate Critical Wellness.”
