DuPage County Board Chairman Greg Hart showed his support for the Ukrainian community by visiting a local Ukrainian church on Thursday.
“America must stand united with Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. I visited St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Bloomingdale to show my support for our Ukrainian community in DuPage and abroad. My thoughts and prayers are with the brave Ukrainian people as they fight for freedom, democracy, and our shared values,” Hart said in a statement.
More than 45,000 residents of the Chicago metropolitan area consider themselves to be of Ukrainian ancestry, with most residing in the suburbs in DuPage, Cook, and Lake counties.
After years of Soviet persecution, Ukrainians fought for a free and democratic country as well as a free and independent Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
St. Andrew’s has about 150 families as members.
The church is largely made up of Ukrainian World War II immigrants, second generation Ukrainians and now a new immigration of Ukrainians.
During his visit, Hart met with the church's President of the Board John A. Jaresko to discuss the needs of the Ukrainian community in DuPage and how DuPage County can help support Ukrainian Americans at home and abroad.
Hart is currently running for re-election as DuPage County Chairman.
