CCOM Students Encourage Everyone to Go Bald in Support of Cancer Research

33

Midwestern University students, faculty members, and community residents will join forces on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, to raise awareness and funds to battle childhood cancer – while getting their heads shaved at Ballydoyle Irish Pub in downtown Downers Grove, IL. Students from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine have organized a “St. Baldrick’s Shave for a Change” fundraiser, which is open to the public and marks the in-person return of this popular event. Participants raise funds by gathering donations and shaving their heads in solidarity with children who are experiencing the side effects of cancer treatments.

“I believe these large fundraising events are important to help organizations like St. Baldrick’s. Since the pandemic started, donations have decreased dramatically, so now more than ever it is important that we assist by fundraising,” said Nick Schieldt (CCOM 2024), one of the student organizers for the event. “The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a wonderful organization that raises money for pediatric cancer research. We have been supporting them for many years and will continue to do so for many more.”

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long, healthy lives. For the month leading up to the event, individuals can support the students’ efforts through the fundraising page at https://www.stbaldricks.org/events/mypage/6221/2022 and all are welcome to join them the day of the event.
