After the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office reported over 1,000 homicides in 2021, those rates grabbed Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer (R-Jacksonville)'s attention.

“We have to hold criminals accountable for the crimes they commit,” he wrote on Facebook. “Personal  Responsibility! The majority party also must understand that changing the definition of crime doesn’t make the problem go away. It just lets the criminal get away with something that should be a crime!”

The county last reported over 1,000 homicides in 1994, according to CBS Chicago. This year's numbers show 81% of the county's homicide victims identified as Black while 15% were Latino.

Davidsmeyer’s platform strongly supports protecting the Second Amendment, which has recently lead to him railing against the long delay to get a Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card.

“I Googled the other day. ‘How long does it take to get a FOID card?’ and it came up 127 days,” he said to the Metro East Sun. “Now that was as of March 5. I think that was the most recent number they had, but they're still way behind.”

There have been more than 777 homicides in Chicago alone, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. As of Nov. 30, there were 1,009 homicides in the county for the year, and 927 were gun-related.  The record for Cook County is  1,229 homicides in 1991, according to CBS Chicago. Cook County had 986 homicides last year, a  40%  increase over 2019’s total of 675.
