Darien Garden Club Celebrates 20 Years

The Darien Garden Club is proud to celebrate its 20th Anniversary in November. Mayor Marchese congratulated the club and issued a Proclamation Honoring “Darien Garden Club Day” (November 1, 2021).

Help them celebrate the past and look to the future as they gather together for their November General Meeting and celebrate their 20th Anniversary. Come to see what projects we have been involved in over the years. There will be time to reminisce and time to share our dreams for the future.

All former members, DGC friends and the public are welcome. Come and find out what we've been up to for the last 20 years and consider joining in the future of this dynamic community-oriented local club. Please register here. Darien residency is NOT required.

Fall Leaf Collection

Free Leaf pick-up will run October 15 through December 17, on your regular refuse day.

Leaves ONLY may be placed in kraft yardwaste bags or a can with a Yardwaste Identification Label attached, and placed at the curb with no sticker needed. Plastic bags ARE NOT allowed.

All other yardwaste must still have a garbage sticker attached. Leaves MAY NOT be raked into the street. This causes flooding problems for you and your neighbors!

Branch Collection: Oct. 25-29

The City of Darien offers FREE BRANCH PICKUP for residents. The final collection will be the week of October 25-29. To help keep the streets clean and our crews on schedule, please stack the branches neatly by the curb on the Sunday before the pickup week. The chipper can accept branches up to 6” in diameter. Please do not tie the branches or put in garbage cans. All other yard waste such as grass clippings and flowers should be disposed of through our yard waste program with Waste Management. Please contact Municipal Services at 630-353-8105 with any questions.

Waste Management Invoicing Error

In error, some recent invoices from Waste Management may include an Administrative Fee and a Compliance and Business Impact Fee. These fees should NOT be assessed to Darien residents. Please review your invoice, and if these fees appear, contact Waste Management at 708-409-9700.

DuPage County Community Vaccination Clinic Now Open for COVID-19 Booster Shots

Adults aged 65 years and older are at increased risk of illness from COVID-19. If you received the initial Pfizer series more than 6 months ago then DuPage County Health Department strongly recommends you get a Pfizer booster shot.

Register for appointment notifications at: www.dupagehealth.org/covid19vaccine or call (630) 682-7400 if assistance is needed with registration (e.g., no internet or computer access, need language assistance, or have questions).

Trick-or-Treating and Halloween Festivities

The City does not have established trick-or-treating hours but recommends trick-of-treating during daylight hours.

Follow these tips for a safe Halloween:
  • If children are allowed out after dark, fasten reflective tape to their costumes and bags, or give them glow sticks
  • Opt for nontoxic Halloween makeup over masks, which can obscure vision; always test makeup in a small area first to see if any irritation develops
  • A responsible adult should accompany young children on the neighborhood rounds
  • Children and adults are reminded to put electronic devices down, keep heads up and walk, don't run, across the street
  • Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs

Check out the Darien Park District's Halloween for Ghouls & Goblins on Thursday, October 28 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm. at the Darien Park District Community Center. No tricks, just treats & lots of fun at our Halloween party for all 2-5-year-olds. An adult needs to come along to help your child with the activities, games & crafts. Children should come dressed in their costumes. Pre-Registration through Darien Park District is required (no walk-ins allowed) - Learn More

The Darien Lions together with the Darien Park District will be having a free kids Halloween Party on Halloween night, Sunday, October 31, from 6-8 p.m. at Darien Sportsplex. The party features a spooky graveyard, games, prizes and an ice cream social. The Lions will also be serving hot dogs, chips and soda outside for a nominal fee. Join us for a fun safe night.

West Suburban Community Pantry
Seeking Volunteers

West Suburban Community Pantry is looking to do more good in the community and needs your help. The Woodridge food pantry, serving all of DuPage County as well as Bolingbrook and Romeoville, has seen demand rise through the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, with some volunteers less able to help due to health or childcare challenges, and the demand of the holidays approaching, the pantry is seeking additional volunteers to help with opportunities ranging from food distribution to sorting goods and stocking shelves. For more information on volunteer opportunities or an application, visit wscpantry.org/volunteer-2 or email Volunteer Coordinator Colleen Loftus.

Be in the Know - Help Spread the Word

Darien’s Direct Connect E-Newsletter (DC) is the City’s primary source of information for residents and businesses. There are approximately 4,800 subscribers to DC - we want to double that number before the end of the year and we need your help to reach that goal. Please tell your friends and neighbors about DC, forward this email to them, and ask them to sign up. Signing up is simple and can be done here. Thanks!
