Flag Ceremony Thank You, Coffee with a Cop

City of Darien issued the following announcement on Sept. 23

Darien Flag and Remembrance Ceremony
Mayor Marchese, members of the City Council and public safety personnel attended the Hinsdale South vs Central football game on Friday, September 17 for a “Darien Flag and Remembrance Ceremony.” Join us as the VFW raised the colors. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate and we were unable to complete the ceremony, but thanks to all who attended and participated!

Bond Set at $1 Million for Two Men Accused of Two Armed Robberies
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin, Downers Grove Chief of Police Shanon Gillette and Darien Chief of Police Greg Thomas announced that bond has been set for two men currently on probation for robbery out of Cook County charged with robbing two DuPage County gas stations at gunpoint. The men appeared in Bond Court this week where bond was set at $1million with 10% to apply for each man. Both men have been charged with two counts of Armed Robbery, a Class X Felony, punishable by 6 to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Read more.

Rail Safety Week: September 20-26
Are you a transit or passenger rail rider? Remember, when you see tracks, always think train! Here are some tips to help you stay safe:
  • Never drive or walk around lowered grade crossing gates.
  • Never attempt to outrun an approaching train.
  • Never stop your vehicle on a grade crossing waiting for traffic to move.
  • Never begin to drive across the tracks unless you can get all the way across.
  • Always remember a train can take a mile or more to stop.
  • Always know that the average train is three feet wider than the track on each side.
  • Always slow down and stop your vehicle prior to train tracks when lights begin to flash.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. If someone you know is thinking about suicide, #BeThe1To help them connect to resources. Help them build a support system, including the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline '1-800-273-TALK (8255)', family, friends, clergy, coaches, coworkers and/or therapists. Learn more.

September is National Preparedness Month
National Preparedness Month (NPM) is an observance each September to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time. The 2021 theme is “Prepare to Protect. Preparing for disasters is protecting everyone you love.”

Week 4 Theme: "Teach Youth About Preparedness"
Talk to your kids about preparing for emergencies and what to do in case you are separated. Reassure them by providing information about how they can get involved. 

Coffee with a Cop - October 6
Join the Darien Police Department on Wednesday, October 6, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at McDonald's at 809 Plainfield Road. This event brings police officers and citizens together over coffee to discuss community issues and build relationships in a safe environment. Queen of Hearts Raffle
The Darien Lions are conducting a Queen of Hearts raffle in partnership with Q Bar and Grill, 8109 S. Cass Ave, Darien. This week, the King of hearts was revealed at position 20. The pot grows to $75,000 for next week's drawing. Half the consolidated pot at the time of drawing goes to the person whose selected ticket reveals the Queen of Hearts. The proceeds go to assisting the needy in and around the Darien community.

Darien District 61 Foundation Annual Raffle 
The Darien District 61 Educational Foundation is selling tickets for its annual raffle. This year’s theme is “Trick or Treat for Education.” The monthlong raffle is based on the Illinois State Lottery’s Pick 3 Evening Straight Draw. If your raffle ticket matches the state lottery number, you win! You can win every day during the month of October ($75 each day and a Grand Prize of $200 on Halloween). For information on how to buy tickets, please visit darien61foundation.org. Tickets ($10 each or three for $25) are on sale through Sept. 30. Proceeds will help fund teacher grants.
