Dist 87 Glenbard School District issued the following announcement on Sept.
GPS speaker to share insight into college admission
The Glenbard Parent Series: (GPS) Navigating Healthy Families will present Who Gets In & Why: A Year Inside College Admissions at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, via Zoom. Go to glenbardgps.org for the link to this webinar. To be placed on a reminder list for GPS events or to submit a question in advance, send an email to gilda_ross@glenbard.org.
Drawing on research from two years inside the admissions process, including sitting beside application readers at three selective schools, this webinar with Jeff Selingo will help students, families and school staff better understand the shifting landscape and what it takes to get into a top college. Selingo will share insight on why admissions is focused on a college’s priorities and the shaping of an admissions class. He will explain how to approach the college search so a student has the best academic, social and financial fit in a campus.
Selingo is the author of New York Times bestsellers, “College (Un)Bound” and “There Is Life After College.” He provides insight and advice to students, families, educators and academic leaders about the inner workings of colleges and universities and what’s next for higher education. His third book, “Who Gets In & Why: A Year Inside College Admissions,” was released in 2020.
GPS is generously sponsored by the Cebrin Goodman Center, Community Consolidated School District 93 Birth to 5 Community Coalition, Cooperative Association for Special Education (CASE), College of DuPage, DuPage Medical Group, Emmy Gaffey Foundation, Glenbard Early Childhood Collaborative, Kiwanis Clubs of District 9, and Prevention Leadership Team of the DuPage County Health Department.

Educator shares takeaway from program about tech, wellness tips
B-PAC Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee and the Glenbard Parent Series-Spanish kicked off a series of programming on Sept. 16, during Hispanic Heritage Month, a month to recognize the contributions, achievements and rich culture of the Latinx community.
Luz Luna, B-PAC coordinator, and Romina Geisman, pediatric nurse and mental health practitioner, led the webinar titled Technology Training and Wellness Tips to Help Kids Thrive. Watch the webinar at this link.
Jennifer Buck-Castaneda, English learner coordinator, shared the following takeaway from the webinar: "I was reminded of the importance of using PowerSchool to see how my student is doing in school and to communicate with teachers. I also learned that the adolescent brain continues to develop until the age of 25, and it is very susceptible to stress. We are seeing many more students suffering from anxiety and depression – due to the pandemic and for other reasons. As parents, we need to pay attention and not ignore the symptoms we see. The earlier we intervene, the better. Seek medical help, or call 911, if necessary. We should never minimize their pain. With patience and empathy, we can develop the strong, positive parent/child relationship that may determine their choices and their future success.”
Raiders thank first responders
Earlier this month, Glenbard South students sent messages of gratitude to first responders in the community. The messages thank first responders for their hard work, sacrifice and dedication to our community.
