ADDITIONAL BRUSH COLLECTION ADDED NEXT WEEK
To accommodate residents whose regularly scheduled brush pickup had already passed prior to last week’s storms, the Village of Schaumburg's Engineering and Public Works Department has added an additional collection week to its summer brush collection schedule the week of August 23 for the purple and red collection zones. Brush from the blue, yellow and orange zones will be collected on their regular scheduled dates in September. For more information, please refer to the map on the village's website for your neighborhood's collection zone indicated by color.
As a reminder, before placing brush at the curb please adhere to the following preparation guidelines:
- Brush must be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on the Monday of your scheduled week.
- Branches are to be neatly placed curbside with the cut ends toward the street.
- Only branches from trees and bushes (up to eight inches in diameter at the cut end) will be eligible for pick up.
- Branches may be any length, though the ends must be cleanly cut with no attached root systems.
- Brush pick up at any one residence will be limited to approximately 100 square feet of front area along the parkway (approximately 6' high by 17' long).

The Village of Schaumburg encourages the public to participate in the next Community Blood Drive that will take place from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 24 at The Barn, 231 S. Civic Drive.
Interested blood donor participants should call (877) 25VITAL (877-258-4825) or register online on Vitalant's website and use sponsor code SH98. Appointments are highly recommended to reduce wait times; however, walk-ins are welcome. All participants must wear a face covering at the event. Safe social distancing measures will be in place. If you are feeling unwell, please stay home.
Participating donors will receive a coupon for a pint of Culver’s frozen custard as well as a pair of Schaumburg Boomers tickets and will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win one of four $25 Pilot Pete’s gift cards.
Schaumburg partners with Vitalant to offer five blood drives a year for the community to help with blood donation. For more information about the village’s community blood drives, please visit the village's website, dial 311 in the village, or call the Nursing Division at (847) 923-3767.
SCHOOL ZONE AND SCHOOL BUS SAFETY REMINDERS
With schools now in session, more children are in neighborhoods walking or bicycling to school and getting on and off school buses, often unaware of their surroundings. The Schaumburg Police Department would like to remind motorists to slow down and pay extra attention when children are present – especially before and after school. The following are some safety reminders:
- Do not block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light, stop sign or when waiting to make a turn.
- In a school zone when there are flashing lights, reduce your speed, stop and yield to pedestrians crossing the crosswalk or intersection.
- Always stop for a crossing guard.
- Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians.
- Remain alert as you back out of a driveway or drive through a school zone or bus stop.
- Slow down and watch for people walking in the street, especially if there are no sidewalks.
- Watch for children playing and congregating near bus stops or street corners.
- Yellow flashing lights on a school bus mean slow down as the bus is preparing to stop.
- Red flashing lights and an extended stop arm means stop. All traffic on the roadway, unless the roadway is divided by a raised center median, is required to stop for a school bus. Remain stopped until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving.
- The 10 foot area around a school bus is the most dangerous for children; stop far enough back to allow them space to safely enter and exit the bus.
MEET CHICAGO NORTHWEST HOTEL SUMMIT RECAP
Matt Frank, Director of Economic Development, presented at Meet Chicago Northwest’s Hotel Summit 2021 on August 12. Over 40 hotel sales directors and general managers were in attendance to learn the latest on developments in the northwest suburbs. Schaumburg continues to see new development and growth with Costco Logistics, Road Ranger, Shabu-You and X-Golf all expected to open soon. These developments will add demand and amenities for Schaumburg’s hotels.
The leisure market has picked up significantly with weddings, vacations and other activities helping to boost hotel’s average daily rates and occupancy levels. The corporate market is still sluggish as the pandemic has limited business travel. The hotel market is anticipated to fully recover by 2024. In order to ensure Schaumburg’s 30 hotels remain a safe place, the Village Board recently approved an ordinance to require participation in the Village’s Safe Hotel Program and other security measures to help reduce calls for service activity.

'Fight the Bite' to Prevent West Nile Virus During Summer Months
Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) officials remind residents to Fight the Bite and protect against West Nile virus (WNV) during the summer months. Prevention is the most effective way to protect yourself and your family from becoming infected with WNV. The most effective way to prevent WNV is to practice the 3 R’s: Remove standing water around your home including pet water bowls, flower pot saucers, rain gutters and bird baths; Repel mosquitoes when outdoors by applying insect repellent with DEET; and Repair or replace torn screens on doors and windows. For the latest updates, please visit the CCDPH website.
