State Sen. Karina Villa (D-West Chicago) and Glen Ellyn School Board President Dr. Robert Bruno were both recently named to a panel that will address race in schools.
Among specific topics to be addressed at the panel, hosted by the Democratic Women of DuPage County later this month, are “How are teachers prepared for culturally responsive teaching and how concerned community members can work to negate what they view as false depictions."
“Civil discourse is not only required for productive communication but it is necessary for good decision-making,” Bruno previously told the DuPage Policy Journal. “I’m guided by the commitment that we should be tough on the issues but kind to one another.”
Racism and critical race theory, both hot-button issues, are on the docket. With Bruno known to be an advocate for socialism, the panel could provide plenty of fireworks.
Villa co-sponsored the Education and Workforce Equity Act, according to Illinois Newsroom, and says she herself experienced cultural miscommunication with white teachers while growing up.
The panel will also include Stacy Davis Gates, Rebecca Gamboa and Drushya Musham.
