On May 12, Illinois House Minority Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs) proposed to rename the 47th Street Bridge over Interstate 294 the "Brooks Edwin Tonn Memorial Bridge” through House Joint Resolution 13.
This is to honor a young boy named Brooks Tonn who was an inspiration to many people with his positivity as he went through his medical battle. Durkin recounted how the child lived his life.
“Through this resolution…I wish to name this bridge, the 47th Street Bridge after Brooks, the ‘Brooks Edwin Tonn Memorial Bridge,’” Durkin said. “Brooks Tonn is no longer with us. A young 10-year old boy who lost his life to a rare cancer. He fought a courageous battle, something no child should have to go through. He was always upbeat and positive about life. He lived by the motto 'Have courage and be kind.' We could use a lot of that in this building and in this chamber. He was a special and remarkable young man.”
Durkin also requested that all members of the House be added as co-sponsors.
After a moment of silence to honor Brooks, the House voted favorably on the resolution with 118 yes votes, and all members of the House were added as co-sponsors.
In Brooks' memory, his parents established the Brooks Strong Foundation to help other families and children battling pediatric cancer.
