State Rep. Amy Grant (R-Wheaton) is standing firm against a  graduated income tax.

Illinois House Speaker Chris Welch is proposing another round of talks to consider a graduated income tax, which was already turned down by the majority of the voters last fall.

Grant emphasized that this is not the appropriate time to add more weight to people’s shoulders.

“There is no denying that we have serious budget issues in Illinois, but the cycle of tax and spend is not and has not ever been the solution,” Grant said. “Our focus should be on promoting economic growth – not increasing taxes on the people of Illinois.”

Grant has always supported keeping Illinois' flat tax

“Families throughout the state are scrambling for the exit, and I am urging our chamber to ‘Keep Illinois Flat’ and reject the graduated income tax. It is bad for Illinois, it’s bad for all taxpayers. It is bad for the middle class. The blank check is dangerous because the flat rate is the only counter that taxpayers have left to protect their wallets,” she said in a 2019 press conference.

In May, Grant argued against putting the progressive income tax proposal on the November ballot.

The House GOP has filed House Resolution 135 (HR 135) to formally affirm its objection to the tax hike.
