COMMUNITY CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL DISTRICT 89: District will begin saliva surveillance screening one elementary classroom per week

Coronavirus7

Community Consolidated School District 89 issued the following announcement on Feb 5.

We would like to thank the families that helped make CCSD 89 school buildings safer by participating in the district’s post-winter-break saliva surveillance screening. All CCSD 89 staff members and in-person middle school students continue to participate in the SafeGuard Surveillance saliva screening.

The SafeGuard screening has helped provide district-specific data on potential infection rates and allowed the district to remain open for in-person learning. You can view the results here: https://bit.ly/3om17Ks

After the first two weeks of January, CCSD 89 did not continue weekly screens of elementary school students who were not eating lunch at school and not mixing classroom groups. Since then, the district has continued to look for affordable ways to monitor potential infections in elementary schools.

Beginning Tuesday, February 16, small groups of elementary students will be screened once a week. Each week, all of the in-person students from one randomly selected class in the district will participate in SafeGuard saliva screening.

The screening will be the same as the surveillance the district used in January: filling a small vial with saliva. You can see a video explanation of the test here: https://youtu.be/JTREKbtNznQ

The screening will be done at school with minimal disruption to learning time. Classrooms will be selected at random. At this time, the district does not intend to give any class a second randomly selected saliva screening until all classrooms have been selected once. If community conditions change, the district could increase the number or frequency of classrooms being tested.

This random screening will allow the district to continue to identify potential cases of COVID-19, stop spread within schools, and maintain a healthy environment for students and staff.
