Village of Glendale Heights Golf Club Committee met Nov. 12.
Here is the minutes provided by the committee:
Meeting called to order at 7:00pm by Pat Maritato, a quorum was not established and the meeting began.
Attendance: Pat Maritato (Chair), Mike Marron (Village Administrator), Trustee Bill Schmidt, Jennifer Ferrell, Ed Lambke, Bob Hoffman and Trustee Chester Pojack
Others present: Steve Solesky, Rosemary Russell (Notes/Minutes)
Communications: None
Public Discussion: None
Approval of Minutes from January 16, 2020: Mr. Maritato asked for approval of the previous meeting's Minutes, Bob Hoffman approved and Ed Lambke seconded. The minutes were approved.
Golf Management Reports: The Committee reviewed the reports from February to September 2020.
Golf Outing Bookings 2020: Jennifer Ferrell stated that golf outings for the year are down due to COVID 19, therefore, outing rounds were down. Most outings were small due to restrictions and only 2 or 3 were shotgun starts. Only 1 outing actually had a dinner after their outing.
Banquet Event Bookings: Jennifer Ferrell stated there have been approximately 15 banquet events from May 2020 until now due to COVID-19.
New Business:
i. Wedding Expo - On March 1, 2020 Lori Alanis, Sarah Quealy and Jennifer Ferrell attended a wedding expo at The Abbington in Glen Ellyn. This is the first time for the golf course to attend this event. Unfortunately, only one inquiry was received from the event. The question now becomes was it worth attending this event at a cost of $900 to only receive one inquiry?
ii. Cancellation of Events Due to COVID-19 - All events after March 19, 2nd Fish Fry, Easter, Mother's Day Brunch, Spring Fling and Charity Classic, were cancelled.
iii. Discussion of 2020 Summary- Jennifer Ferrell gave a brief synopsis of golf season and banquet summary, month by month, starting in January 2020. She discussed the most important events noting the golf course opened on March 5th and then shut down on March 21st_ In May the golf course opened with restrictions while banquets still remained closed. In July the lockdown was partially lifted and banquets were allowed to resume but with restrictions on the number of people and many challenges related to servicing of the customers (e.g. social distancing, plated meals only, no condiments allowed at tables). Lastly, Turkey Shoot was held on 11/7 & 11/8 with reduced golfers and lunch only at the turn due to COVID-19 modifications.
iv. Discussion of Golf Rates for 2021 Season: Jennifer Ferrell gave each member a handout that outlines new recommendations for golf rates and structures for 2021 prepared by her and Steve Salesky. These rates also include a change in the high school rates. She stated that due to a raise in the minimum wage that is set to begin January 1, 2021 the new rates were needed. Additionally, the golf course is holding off on "golf specials" until the new season starts and an analysis can be done. Offering specials is a way to attract golfers to our facility, but as busy as we were this year, we might not have to discount to attract golfers. Ed Lambke suggested that next year the golf course should advertise that we host the Regional IHSA High School Golf Tournament. He believes this may attract new golfers to the course.
v. FYI - Golf & Banquet Restrictions: Previously discussed in Item iii.
PROJECT UPDATE:
i. Bunker Renovations: Jennifer Ferrell gave each member of handout showing work that needs to be completed, or has already been completed, on the bunkers at the golf course .
ii. Projects & Purchases Current Fiscal Year: Jennifer Ferrell reviewed all the completed projects for the current fiscal year at the golf course. She spoke about the donated sand from Park Ridge Golf Club. With the help from the VOGH Parks Division and the Public Works Department some was moved to the golf course while the remainder is in storage at Nazos Park. Also she stated that the sand traps are in need of new lining and that this will be a slow process because the work is being done "in house". Additionally, new blinds and sheers were installed in the banquet room, as well as, a new sliding wall between the rooms. This wall is much more sound proof than the old wall.
Other projects began this year are: A Battery Maintenance Program that replaces half of the golf cart batteries. The purchase of 2 golf maintenance carts late in the summer. Adding drainage by the cart staging area was done by the Public Works Department. Hopefully, portions of some of the cart paths will be done next year. Irrigation at the back of the club house was installed and sprinklers added. A new fence and gate will be installed next year at the Maintenance Building. The fence will be replaced "in house". The par 3 tee boxes received a lot of damage this year and Brian Trifilio will expand the tee boxes to help resolve this issue.
Jennifer Ferrell asked if there were any questions from the Committee. Ed Lambke stated that the greens are beautiful and would Jennifer pass that information along to Brian Trifilio. Chairman Maritato stated Brian did an outstanding job on the golf course all summer considering the amount of play on the course. Bob Hoffman questioned if the golf course would be open during the winter and Jennifer stated it would be weather dependent. Mr. Hoffman also suggested taking credit cards over the phone for reserving golf play.
Lastly, Jennifer Ferrell spoke of the passing of longtime employee, Blanche Balaja, which occurred in late April and Dave Edwards, longtime committee member of the Glendale Lakes Golf Course Committee, which occurred in late September. Chairman Maritato stated he would like a plaque (perhaps on a bench) to be placed on the golf course in memory of Mr. Edwards and his service to the Committee. Bob Hoffman suggested by a tree either on hole 2 or 3. Everyone agree and Jennifer Ferrell stated she would begin to do some research on this project. Chairman Maritato asked for a motion to adjourn. Bob Hoffman motioned and Ed Lambke seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 8:00pm.
