Democrat Dagmara “Dee” Avelarhas won the District 85 House seat, defeating Republican Ron Doweidt.
Avelar becomes the first Latina elected to represent the district in a historic election.
“I am humbled by the overwhelming amount of support from the residents of Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Lockport and Fairmont,” she wrote on Facebook.
Avelar dedicated the victory to the people of the 85th district who believe in compassion not hate, equity and not divisiveness, and opportunities for all.
“I am committed to work for these values. Thank you for your trust,” she added.
