U.S. Rep. Sean Casten is taking a ribbing for a photo of him and two supporters each holding up six fingers.
Radio personality Dan Proft took to Twitter to poke fun at the Congressman’s ‘666’ salute.
“@seancasten aka Screwtape and his campaign Wormwoods flash 666 while out campaigning today. I know he's part of the Atheist Caucus (seriously) but Satanism? And don't tell me that's for the 6th district. It isn't. How do the west, NW burbs countenance this goof? #Elections2020” Proft said on Twitter.
Casten was previously noted to belong to the atheist caucus, which he joined upon entering Congress in 2019. The Congressional Freethought Caucus is headed by the Freedom from Religion Foundation.
Casten has consistently called out policymakers who make any reference to religion on social media or otherwise. After U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo quoted a Bible verse on Twitter in January, Casten insinuated that Pompeo brought up religion to cover up corruption, Dupage Policy Journal reported.
Casten has also targeted U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) for his religious remarks on Twitter.
“The Marco Rubio random bible verse / cry for help remains one of the most persistently weird things on Twitter,” Casten wrote on Twitter. “Just come to the light, Senator.”
Casten’s 2020 challenger, Jeanne Ives, questioned Casten’s constant posts in August.
“Does Sean Casten think people of faith are mentally ill,” Ives said, DuPage Policy Journal reported. “Why would an expression of faith on Twitter be met with mockery and shaming by a public official? Apparently Sean Casten wants to Keep Twitter Toxic.”
He was also endorsed by Atheist Freethought Equality PAC during his current re-election campaign.
