Bloomingdale Park District issued the following announcement on June 3.
In a remarkable act of co-operation, the Bloomingdale Park District recently enabled the Bloomingdale Garden Club to satisfy their many plant sale customers and supporters.
Due to prevailing circumstances, most garden clubs in the area canceled their spring plant sales entirely. And while the tremendously popular traditional plant sale of the Bloomingdale club could not be held, many regular customers had placed pre-sale orders as early as February.
Hours of deliberations took place, and concerns were constantly expressed regarding the restrictions imposed because of the Corona Virus. The biggest obstacle was would it be possible to find a venue from which these pre-sale orders could be sorted and delivered. Traditionally the plant sale takes place in the maintenance building of the Park District. At the very time that the Governor relaxed restrictions and permitted nurseries and garden shops to re-open, the Bloomingdale Park District advised the garden club that this building could be used for the purpose of delivering the pre-sale orders!
Two days of hectic activity ensued with the clearing of this space, erecting of 40+tables, early morning delivery and unloading of the truck, as well as sorting of individual orders took place. A minimum number of individuals accomplished this and all customers were given a specific time for pick up. Club members worked tirelessly to ensure that the rules and restrictions were adhered to and, at the end of the two days, a minor miracle had been achieved!
Over 60 happy customers were satisfied and thousands of plants will bring color and beauty to gardens in Bloomingdale and surrounding areas. The new Executive Director of the Bloomingdale Park District , Joe Potts, said: “It is hard to put a price tag on making people happy!”
In these difficult times, it was an enormous accomplishment only possible because of the refined and outstanding relationship that exists between these two entities. The Garden Club donates all of the profits from its plant sale to local charities and this year even with a much smaller profit, were also able to provide flowers for Old Town Park- one of the gems of the Bloomingdale Park District.
The Club hopes to start its monthly meetings again as soon as possible and invites members and guests to once again enjoy outstanding programs, and the friendship and camaraderie for which this club is justly known.
